Mr. Olsen’s New Year’s Rockin’ Neighborhood!

NYE Banner 141-ogNYE Banner 2There will be no better place to be this New Year’s Eve than in Evanston, Illinois – that little college town just north of Chicago.

851575_497491816991199_391471856_nBut why party in Evanston? Why not Paris, or Rome, or the Greek island of Santorini? Why not join the throngs in Times Square – or at Monty’s Steakhouse in Woodland Hills?

Because Evanston in where you can be a part of “Mr. Olsen’s New Year’s Rockin’ Neighborhood” at 27 Live.

DSC_8401The fun begins at 8:00 PM with a one-hour comedy variety revue for the middle ages — hosted by screenwriter/comedian Dana Olsen, and featuring yours truly and my wife Victoria Zielinski of “The Vic & Paul Show”; our tall, blonde friend and fellow Practical Theatre founder, Brad Hall; the great Steve Rashid tinkling the ivories; Rockin’ Ronny Crawford hitting the rim shots on drums; and narrated by Stewart Figa, who will also grace the show with his powerful singing voice.

If you were among the standing-room-only crowd that caught “Mr. Olsen’s Neighborhood” at the Wilmette Theatre last June, you’ll have some idea of the fun to be had when Mr. Olsen and his neighbors get together to share some laughter and comic camaraderie.

Rockme PhotoThen, at 10:00 PM, the kids (of all ages) will start jumpin’ when Riffmaster and The Rockme Foundation take the stage for two sets of classic rock & roll and original songs written by a bunch of guys who grew up listening to the best records ever made and played on the radio. Wit, harmony, the big backbeat — and passionate guitar playing that would make Chuck Berry proud of his children.

Liverpool: so much more than the Beatles’ old hometown

Daughter Emilia’s continuing adventures in Liverpool…

ebarrosse9291's avatarGetting Free

When Aleah and I first arrived in Liverpool, one thing was clear: locals were always disappointed to hear we’d only come in search of Beatles sites. Every time we said, “We came ’cause we’re huge Beatles fans!” we’d get a groan and an, “Alright,” and we’d always feel a bit awkward. But after spending 4 days in Liverpool, we now know how justified the groans were. Liverpool is so much more than Paul McCartney’s childhood home (though that is quite the resume builder). Here are some things you might not know about Liverpool that make it an incredible city regardless of its Beatles heritage.

1. The Museums

Liverpool is home to tens of fabulous museums, all of which are free, and all of which are interactive, informative, beautiful and fascininating. While Aleah and I were there, we made it to The International Slavery Museum, the Tate Liverpool, The

“You’re in Rio—why are you sleeping?” Part (3/5): Being Tourists

Here’s another chapter in my daughter Emilia’s ongoing account of her journalistic adventures in Brazil.

ebarrosse9291's avatarGetting Free

Even though Roshan and I went to Brazil first and foremost as journalists, we made sure to be tourists on our off days.

The most incredible thing about Brazil and Rio de Janeiro—especially with the experience we had there being journalists and tourists—is the massive range of emotions that consumed us depending on which mode we were in. As journalists, it was high stress, high emotions, high functioning trying to process the misery and the majesty we were seeing.

But as tourists, when your express purpose is to enjoy your surroundings and not necessarily to make moral sense of it all—Brazil can be one of the most calming, cathartic places you could possibly go.

You’ll see when I go through the main tourist destinations we hit.

Sugarloaf Mountain

On our first day of tourism, Roshan and I wanted to go to Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer. We wanted to…

Introducing my daughter Emilia’s new blog…

ebarrosse9291's avatarGetting Free

In November 2013, my roommate Roshan, who is originally from Florida, suggested that for New Year‘s, all of our college friends meet at her place in Ft. Lauderdale/Miami Beach to bring in 2013 together. This is Roshan:

Because I’d already had plans to fly from LA to Cleveland to celebrate my grandma’s 80th birthday, to make both trips, I just exchanged my ticket from LA to Cleveland for 2 cheaper tickets: One from LA to Ft. Lauderdale, and another from Ft. Lauderdale to Cleveland. I was stoked. I was overwhelmed. I was counting down the days. And, as it turns out, I was the only one of our friends who was going.

Of course, neither Roshan nor I cared. We we’re excited. First of all, I felt like this would just be a preview of what it was going to be like when we take Rio…

The Blog Begins…

With this blog, I am taking my first personal step into the wild and fearsome tubes of the internets. So far, I have managed to get my picture on the header and write and illustrate a few hopefully somewhat entertaining and occasionally enlightening pages devoted to “Adventure”, “Politics”, “Rock & Roll” (including a short origin of the Rockme Foundation: a legendary tale told from my POV), and “History” (which, at this point, covers Part One of the story of The Practical Theatre Co. and a brief historical note on The Sturdy Beggars).

If I continue to make progress at this rate, I should have this site truly up and humming by the summer of 2012.

Since Facebook freaks me out, my goal is that this blog will, over time, become a place where friends and other curious folk will be able to keep up with my latest news, projects, photos, thoughts, opinions, and adventures. It will also be a place to connect with a bit of shared history. After all, where else will you find a grainy black and white photo of yours truly, Brad Hall and Robert Ghandi Mendel walking through the south sorority quad on the Northwestern University campus, circa 1977? (I believe these photos were taken by our good buddy and classmate, Jim McCutchen, who is now one of those infamous Philadelphia lawyers).

Each week, I will post a new article to this blog. That’s the plan at least. (Over the course of the coming year, for instance, I hope to finish my brief history of The Practical Theatre.) I hope you’ll peruse the site now and then and let me know what you think. Happy New Year, everybody!
