“Into the Mist” Has Fun Circa 1927

My wife and comedic partner Victoria Zielinski will be playing Dorothy Parker and Ernest Hemingway among a wonderful cast of characters inhabiting a hotel in 1927 as part of an immersive virtual experience called “Into the Mist”. What exactly is “Into the Mist”?

I’ll just let Steve Rashid explain…

Step with us … Into the Mist.

Dear Friends,

A new year. A new day. A new hope. May 2021 bring us a measure of calm, peace and health we so desperately need.

As you know, our aim at Studio5 is to help build community through the performing arts. So I had an idea for a new project back in October, and the concept arrived fairly fully formed. I imagined an entire online world that would place a musical performance in a meaningful and entertaining context. Like time travel, it would be a virtual portal that would give the music an added, dreamy resonance.

I came up with an initial design, talked to a few people to gauge interest in being involved as performers, and got to work. Web designer, Lauren Biolsi, came aboard, and my sons, Robert and Daniel joined to co-produce with me. Three months later, here we are, with a live, immersive, interactive, 1920s jazz-themed event, featuring a diverse cast of over 20 musicians and actors spread literally from coast to coast.

Opening Friday, January 29th, we invite you to step with us … Into the Mist.

Music is a reflection of a time and a culture. That was never more true than in the Jazz Age: America in the 1920s. How exciting would it be to travel back to 1927 and hear a live band? How much more exciting would it be, if, before they started playing you had the opportunity to wander freely through the world of that raucous decade? What if you could choose to hang out in a speakeasy, attend a rent party, play blackjack against a shady dealer, watch some fancy footwork in a dance hall, converse with literary figures of the day, glimpse a fashion show, go to the cinema … and then gather with your friends in a club to hear a hot band? Sound like fun? That is the world that awaits you, starting January 29, 2021 at Studio5 online. Step with us … Into the Mist.

Three Sisters Make June Jump!

Banner 2Sisters BannerFollowers of this blog will surely pardon me for taking just a moment to kvell.

My three talented daughters – Maura, Emilia and Eva — each have a big gig coming up this June. And provided you have enough free time and transportation resources, I recommend you make the trifecta.

All of these gigs are just five minutes from anywhere by rocket car.

avatars-000546751557-2hua3w-t500x500First off, there’s Eva B. Ross’ gig at Steve and Bea Rashid’s fabulous Studio5 cabaret in Evanston, Illinois (just north of Chicago) on June 15th. She’ll be mixing jazz standards and her own songs, backed by Steve Rashid on keys, Robert Rashid on drums and Grant Milliken on vibes.

For tickets, go to the Studio5 website.

While in the Chicago area, Eva will also play a set of original tunes at Hungry City on June 14th.

At the same time, Eva’s older sister Emilia Barrosse is playing a gig in Carlsbad, California – yeah, Carlsbad.

The next Just Tryna Make Friends event is Saturday, June 15, 2019 from 6:00 PM to 1:00 AM. It’s a PROM SEASON party.

Attendees are encouraged to shine their dancing shoes and pick out their favorite tuxes and dresses for this prom-themed comedy extravaganza, complete with a live DJ spinning the best prom playlist of 2010, reliably-spiked punch — and absolutely no chaperones.

Eva B. Ross @ The Hotel Cafe

If you haven’t seen my singer-songwriter daughter Eva in performance yet – this is the gig to see.

I don’t know much about the music scene in Los Angeles, but I understand that it’s a big deal to play The Hotel Café. It’s evidently one of the cools gigs to get. And Eva’s got it.

So, check Eva out at The Hotel Café. The show just happens to be on my birthday, Saturday April 16th at 9:45. (Sure it’s a late start – but you can sleep in on Sunday, right? Besides, it’s my birthday, remember?)

Eva’s very talented UCLA friend, Nick Valentini, is also on the bill with his eclectic and tasty band. I’ve seen Nick and his crew perform – and they’re brilliant!

It’s going to be a legendary night of great music.

So, be there. Victoria and I will be — and we hope to see you all there.

The Vic & Paul & Dana Show

VPD Banner #1

Mee-Ow Art JPEGMy wife Victoria and I have known Dana Olsen since our days at Northwestern University in the late 1970’s. Dana was a damned funny guy then – and he’s gotten even funnier over the years.

While Victoria and I worked on the stage and then in television, Dana focused on screenwriting. Among the many films he’s written are The Burbs, Memoirs of an Invisible Man and George of the Jungle.

Document6 JPEGVic and I have remained close with Dana since graduation – and in the past few years we’ve been performing together again. The last time was when we joined Dana and other friends for Mr. Olsen’s New Year’s Rockin’ Neighborhood on New Year’s Eve 2013 at 27 Live in Evanston, Illinois – the college town just north of Chicago where we all first met in 1976.

For the past several months, we’ve been getting together with Dana whenever he’s in town – or we’re in Chicago – to brainstorm and improvise comedy sketches (which is just about our very favorite thing to do in this world). And, golly, the world’s been giving us some great subject matter this year!

Steve & RonnyThen, two great musical friends agreed to join the party: our longtime Practical Theatre Company musical director and Whiskey Lounge impresario, Steve Rashid — and drummer Rockin’ Ronny Crawford, who’s hit the skins for Lisa Loeb, Anna Nalick and The Rockme Foundation, among many others.

VPD Poster #7 JPEGThus comes “The Vic & Paul & Dana Show” — an improv sketch revue featuring music, comedy and a few cocktails. Baby Boomers by birth, we’re all wading chest-deep through middle age. But blessedly, our sharp taste for humor and irony – and a neat Manhattan — has not been dulled. Our show is a toast to grown up fun amid the craziness of contemporary life.

“The Vic & Paul & Dana Show” will play for just three nights – from Thursday, November 19 to Saturday, November 21 at the iO West Theatre in Hollywood, CA. All shows at 7:30.

Come out, enjoy a beverage or two — and share some well-earned laughs with us.

Here’s a gallery of shots from our photo session with Bradford Rogne. (He’s really good, folks.)
